Amnesty International is an non-political organisation whose goal is the promotion of human-rights, particulalry in those regions of the World where abuses against the individual's basic right to justice and self-determination are known to take place.
Our members come from all walks of life, with ages ranging from teens to retired, students to managing directors, atheists to church minsters. The one thing we all have in common is a feeling that we, as citizens in a relatively safe and free society, could do a lot more to help those in the world who do not enjoy these basic rights, living as they do under despotic regimes, extremist religions, or corrupt bureaucracies.
We hold regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. A typical meeting -which non-members are welcome to attend- would consist of discussion of the latest campaigns, perhaps a talk or slideshow by a spokesperson who has visited one of the regions we support, and letter-writing activities.
Our campaigning activities include street-collections to raise funds. These funds are to support the central Amnesty UK operation, and to facilitate human-rights actions where the victims of abuse cannot reasonably fund such activities themselves.
As a lighter side to our events we also hold music evenings, dances and other entertainment events, open to the public. These serve a dual purpose of raising awareness of our cause, and of generating a small profit which goes towards cammpaign funds.
We are a charitable group of concerned and public-spirited citizens, and in no way are any of us remunerated for our work. We have no connection with any other groups you might see on the streets asking for creditcard donations towards human-rights work. We will never ask you for creditcard or bank details. The most we will ask you for is a cash donation, although your moral or written support in terms of lobbying Governments is equally welcome.
If, like us, you feel that the individual's voice counts, then you could help by supporting our campaigns. This could be as simple as spending a few minutes signing and posting a pre-written letter in support of a campaign. Or, if you think you might like to meet the group and get involved, why not come along to a meeting and see for yourself what we do?
